Epilepsy Ireland are currently seeking participants for the 24th year of our Training for Success course in ATU Sligo.
We recently welcomed a new member of staff to our TFS team in the form of Jenny Jimoh - who also just happens to be a former graduate of the course!
To help aid people with epilepsy who may be thinking of joining the QQI Level 5 course, Jenny has provided information on what drew her to the course which she now works on which you can read below....
My epilepsy had always been something I found hard to talk about. During my time at school the teachers always thought I never took any interest in classes and that I was always asleep - which meant I was always in trouble!
I grew up in an Afro/Caribbean household and there was always a stigma within the community about epilepsy, many of the older generation saw it as an evil disease. This filled me with sadness, vulnerability, frustration and lack of confidence.
I remember an appointment I had with my consultant, and he said that he heard about a course called “Training for Success” that was run in Sligo, and he felt this would be something I should look at. I followed his advice and applied. In August 2017, I began TFS.
At first, I was very scared to make the move, but having read what the course offers, I felt this would be something that would help me. Meeting Maire and Honor (the TFS team at the time) helped to ease that fear and they also showed me great support throughout my time doing the programme.
At the start of the course, I was very nervous but the journey throughout the course helped me to build up my confidence to achieve anything I wanted to do in life. After graduating from the course, I applied to continue into 3rd level education at ATU, Sligo and have just recently graduated with a BA (Hons) in Business HRM.
And - after achieving the degree, I’ve recently returned to TFS. Not as a student, but to work as the course’s Admin Assistant! This gives me great joy as I am now able to help and support future student in gaining the confidence to help them with what they would like to achieve in their lives.
I feel that the TFS programme helped me to achieve this, and I would recommend this to anyone who feels they need support in gaining any independence on their journey with epilepsy.
I more than anyone know about the course and if you’d like to get in touch to discuss joining us for our new year, please do give me a call on 0719155303
